“I’m starting to accept myself” (interview)

Tymoteusz Hołysz: You released a album with a very eloquent title “I can’t dance”, with which I personally identify very much, you said that when you were a child, you met some unpleasant situations related to it. How do you feel with dancing now?

Natalia Grosiak: Thanks to this album, song and music videos that we created for the purposes of releasing the album, I started to open very much. It started with a song “You’ve never fought about me”to which the choreographic movement was invented. I had to learn him and at the beginning, when I found out that I had to dance something at all, I reacted with anger. Such resistance was on my part, but later I found that I would try something new, I would try to break and it turned out that when I watched myself in the camera, of course it was far from an ideal that I would like to get, but I found that I could remember the movement Choreographic, I enjoy it. For the needs of other music videos I also danced, I opened myself to movement, I began to get along with my body in this matter. In fact, this is the beginning of my opening in this sphere. On stage I also let myself forget and not feel. You stand on the front, move and want to, all these eyes go to you. The whole room is looking at you and you dance. And you tell myself – I dance, I’m free, they can laugh. It doesn’t move me anymore. I don’t think I can dance and it’s great. I start to accept myself in this movement.

So you managed to find this inner child who was afraid to dance?

This inner child loved to dance. Before this incident, I loved to dance, move, go to all colonial and school discos. Movement was something natural for me and I loved to do it. Mocking someone is violence. I experienced it, it can also be called a trauma, although maybe this is a too strong word. It really blocked me for many, many years.

Do you have any advice that would help others find out to dance?

I don’t think so. I can only say about my own experience. Everything begins with the acceptance of yourself, and the acceptance of yourself and your imperfections is very hard work and this is not obtained in one day. You also get confidence and love for yourself in your childhood if you are accepted, not criticized and not ridiculed by the immediate surroundings. Then a man who is not afraid of himself, the world and the reaction of the world to his own body or movement grows. This is very hard work if someone is blocked. Just going to a dance course is not enough. I think that you still need to work with just as you said “an inner child” to core them in regret of the past and convince you that whether someone laughs or not, you have the right to move and express yourself in a move.

You talked about acceptance. This is not the only difficult topic on the album, although it appears in several pieces. Where did you get inspiration for songs?

Each song brings a completely different story. I write about my experiences, thoughts, about my own history, which I write with songs.

And one of the topics raised on the album is more unique to you than the others?

There are several such songs. “Probably the best day” This is a very important song, “Marianno”, “I’m a river” They are also very important. “I’m a river” This is a manifesto, defense of the Odra River. This statement on her behalf, because the river has no voice, cannot speak on its own behalf. She couldn’t defend herself at that time. I wrote this song at a request Robert Rientwho created the foundation Odra person. Now, more follow these activities. At Mikromusic concerts, we will sign the draft law on granting legal personality to the river. This song is very important and brings very, very long actions.

You mentioned that you would collect these signatures for the bill, your vinyl record is issued from recycled materials, you defend those who cannot defend themselves, you care about the planet. Do you think that in a sense you can call you a punk team?

As for the sound, it’s not (laughs). Indeed, during my high school, punk culture was associated with veganism, which was very niche at the time. Veganism, the defense of animal rights and nature protection was associated with these colorful punk walking on the street, and the modern punk, which does not drink, does not smoke, go to sleep at 23:00, still in forty, it is me. You can attach it to this philosophy, I am a sensitive and aware person of what times we live and try not to close my eyes, and even use my voice, because I know that people listen to him to tell about very important matters.

I think that this attitude is very important in the context of what is happening today, we need such artists.

That’s true. Of course, there is no obligation to stand on any side. There are artists who deal only with their own work, but if someone believes what they do, it’s nice that they use their voice. I am also very grateful to the team Apple flower for such information and pro -ecological activities.

Let’s go back to the song you mentioned. “Marianno” This is a song dedicated to your grandmother. Did you say that she saw ghosts, do you have any stories related to it?

Yes, my grandmother saw ghosts and told me about it. It was a very interesting grandmother. She was a straight from the book “Peasants” And she grew up as one of the fifteen children in the countryside. My great -grandfather was called MorgulianSo he probably had a lot of earth morgas. Apparently he had a beautiful farm, but that’s why all the children worked on the role. This is the story of every second grandmother, who really liked to study at school, but she could not because she had to work in the field. My grandmother was a simple woman, but extremely spiritual. She believed in her intuition, saw ghosts, and at the same time she was a very good and colorful man.

You have already talked about “I am a river” with Bovska, Marcelina and Bel Komoszyńska. Another guest appears on the album, Dawid Tyszkowski. How did your cooperation happen?

I offered David a completely different piece that he didn’t like him. Dawid has his own specific taste, he goes into darkness all the time and he also likes a heavier sound more. We used to go from a concert and play our new songs together. Dawid will also make a new album soon and when he heard the song “Crows”then the title sounded “Ballad about molting with a match”he said he would like to record for this song. I was dissatisfied with the text that was created for this song because he talked about a toxic relationship and I wanted to refer to Polish winter, this spleen, gray. When we met with Dawid, a fortune-free topic was the same. We stayed with this toxic love, I could not get away from this topic. I think that this melody, Riff, dictated this song. I am glad that we went to the text with David again, because he brought an idea for the chorus about the hidden disease in a relationship and this combined beautifully with the gray crow. Writing the text together went very quickly.

In December, your preorder route to “I can’t dance” ended, later the album came out and at the beginning of February you went on tour again. Did you get a break before returning to the stage?

January was very intensive due to the new publishing house. As every year in January I do nothing and rest, this year it failed. I think that a very intense time is waiting for me again. There are a lot of these concerts, tickets sell beautifully, so I’ll rest later. Of course, taking care of some balance in the meantime. I’m trying.

What about your solo creativity? Last year, several singles came out, does this mean that the album is fast approaching?

For now, I suspended my work over the album due to the fact that Mikromusic had to be brought to an end. In March with Lessman We go back to work.

Do you have some dream guest on a solo album?

I think about it all the time and there are several guests, but I will not reveal who.

There were “Korean series” and what about music? Did you delve into the Korean scene? K-pop is now quite fashionable.

I am not a fan of Korean sounds, they are such “cheeses”, but I prefer more Norwegian, Icelandic sounds or American. The pop world of Asia’s music is probably not my atmosphere, even though I love Korean cinema and series very much.

Would you like to convey something to your listeners at the end?

I invite you to concerts, they will be beautiful, listen to the album, because I am very happy with it, see you and hear!

Do you have suggestions, comments or see a mistake?
