“I Accidentally Wrote a Book”: Entire families should see this film

Nina’s family of three sticks together and has its own routine. They eat in front of the TV because the kitchen table is the workplace of their father, who is a professional animator. Nina’s brother, Junior, practices card tricks and Nina tells him bedtime stories she made up. A girl who wants to become a writer decides to write about how Detti, her father’s new crush, came into their lives.

“It’s quite an unconventional story, because Nina thinks that her problem is that… she doesn’t have a problem. And then it turns out that she does have one – namely, she never really went through the mourning process for her mother,” – explained Nina’s situation by director Nóra Lakos, known for intelligent films for a wide audience, such as the romantic comedy “Cream” (2020).

Animations are an important element of the film. “We use animation to show the most complex emotions,” said Lakos. – “For example, in one of the scenes when Detti and Nina’s father kiss, Nina ‘falls apart’ as an animated character made of letters. So everything connects: the writing, the emotions and the situations that Nina has to face.” The director emphasized that the film talks about a serious topic in a light, even funny way.

The film, which won the Main Competition of the Tauron Młode Horyzonty 2025 IFF and received the European Children’s Film Association (ECFA) award, will be released in the Polish language version. We will hear the voices of, among others: Maria Maj, Aleksandra Domańska and Wojciech Żołądkiewicz. Bartek Fukiet took care of the dialogues and song lyrics.

“I Accidentally Wrote a Book” is a moving and tender story about the power of words, growing up and finding yourself. Twelve-year-old Nina discovers that writing can be not only a passion, but also a way to deal with emotions. The girl immerses herself in the world of imagination and family memories, which helps her cope with the lack of her mother. It also builds self-esteem and opens the heart to first love. It is a story that entertains, moves and inspires, showing that every child has enormous strength.
