Nicole Kidman in the film “Holland” He plays Nancy Vandergroot – a pedantic teacher and a housewife, whose perfect life alongside a respected husband (Matthew Macfaden) and Son (Jude Hill) in the town surrounded by Tulips, Michigan suddenly turns into a dark history. Nancy and her work colleague (Gael García Bernal) begin to suspect that a secret is hidden – but soon they discover that nothing in their lives is as it seems.
Mimi Cave is responsible for directing the new Prime Video, who in 2022 debuted with a positively accepted film “Fresh”.
The thriller originally was entitled “Holland, Michigan” and worked on it for over a decade. He wrote it responsible for the script of Andrew Sodroska in 2013. Then he was on the prestigious “black list” Hollywood – a list of the best unrealized film projects.
Initially, the director’s function was taken by Errol Morris, but in 2022 the aforementioned Mimi Cave was involved. At that time, Nicole Kidman joined the cast, who also serves as a producer.
Interestingly, although the action takes place in the picturesque Holland, Michigan, most of the scenes were shot in Tennessee, which was properly stylized as a Dutch town. The operator Paweł Pogorzelski, known for working on “Midsommar” and “because he is afraid” is responsible for the exceptional visual climate of the film. His photos combine idyllic, pastel suburbs with an atmosphere of anxiety, emphasizing the hidden tensions in the life of the characters.
One of the symbols of the news Prime Video is the model of the model queue, which plays a key role in the story. It is a metaphor for the illusory order in the life of the characters, contrasting with dark events. Also the Tulip Festival – one of the most recognizable events in Michigan – was faithfully reproduced in the film thanks to archival recordings. As many as 250 traditional Dutch costumes were sewn for the needs of the parade scenes.
The creators of “Holland” combined a thriller with elements of satire, introducing absurd and grotesque moments to the plot. They drew inspirations from Hitchcock classics, but added a contemporary, ironic social commentary to it.
The film “Holland” will debut on Prime Video on March 27.
