Harlan Coben: The Best Book Adaptations. Where to Watch?

Harlan Coben is one of the most popular writers in the world. He is the only contemporary writer to have received three prestigious literary awards in the crime novel category: the Anthony Award (for “Without Scruples”), the Barry Award (“Blue Blood”) and one of the most important, the Edgar Allan Poe Award (for “Without a Trace”).

The author has enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with the streaming platform Netflix for years. At the end of 2022, the agreement between them regarding series based on his books was updated. Twelve titles were added to the agreement, which assumed access to 14 of Coben’s novels.

So far, 8 stories have been adapted into films. Some of the productions were made in the UK: “Safe” (2018), “The Stranger” (2020), “Stay with me” (2021), “You can’t fool me anymore” (2024). Two series were made in Poland: “The Woods” (2020) and “Keep Calm” (2022), as well as one in Spain: “The Innocent” (2021) and France: “Gone For Good” (2021).

In 2020, the drama debuted “The Stranger”based on the novel “The Stranger”.

The story focuses on the life of Adam Price’a, a happy husband and father of two children, who suddenly learns unknown facts about his wife. The unwanted discovery will lead him to dark corners. The book characters are played by Siobhan Finneran and Hannah John-Kamen.

“Deep in the forest” covers two time dimensions: 1994 and 2019. The story surprisingly presents the fate of a Warsaw prosecutor, Paweł Kopiński, who, despite the passage of time, is unable to recover from the loss of his beloved sister, who disappeared in unexplained circumstances during a summer camp.

The unexpected discovery of a body whose death seems to be connected to the girl’s disappearance may finally lead to a breakthrough in the investigation. The police suspect that the victim is a boy who disappeared without a trace along with Paweł’s sister 25 years ago. However, hopes for solving the case are overshadowed by deeply hidden family secrets, the revelation of which may cause everything that Paweł has built over the years to fall apart.

Thrills, suspenseful story and secrets of past crimes that are just beginning to come to light. Series “Stay with me” tries to answer the question of how well one can know another person. Each of the four main characters – Megan, a working mother of three, Ray, a once promising photojournalist, Broome – a detective who can’t forget an unsolved disappearance from many years ago, and Lorraine, Megan’s old friend – hides dark secrets from their loved ones. The past comes back to haunt them, threatening to ruin the lives of not only themselves, but also the people close to them. What will be their next move?

“Keep calm” presents the story of a family whose fate is turned upside down in just a few moments. Anna and Michał Barczyk, together with their children, live in a wealthy, gated community. Described as the Polish Beverly Hills by one of the characters, it seems to be an oasis of peace. Nothing could be further from the truth. Secrets hidden for years and problems lurking just beneath the surface begin to come to light when 18-year-old Adam Barczyk disappears. His mother will do anything to find him, even at the highest cost.

Series “You won’t fool me anymore” follows Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan) as she tries to come to terms with the death of her husband Joe (Richard Armitage). When she installs a camera to keep an eye on her daughter, she is shocked when a man shows up at her house, whom she immediately recognizes as her recently deceased partner. Meanwhile, Detective Sami Kierce (Adeel Akhtar) investigates Joe’s murder while struggling with her own secrets. Maya’s niece and nephew, Abby and Daniel, try to uncover the truth about their mother’s death, which occurred several months earlier. Are these two cases connected?

The story follows the heroes’ exciting quest to uncover shocking secrets that will change their lives forever.
