History“Colorful fairs”dates back to 1977 – then, under 15. National Polish Song Festival in Opolethe Polish audience heard the legendary hit for the first time. She did it not Maryla Rodowicza Janusz Laskowski – composer and vocalist, whom most of the listeners today associate primarily thanks to the hit “Beata from Albatros”.
The text was written Ryszard Ulickiwhich initially skeptical about cooperation with Laskowski. After watching his concert in Koszalin, however, he changed his mind about the work of the singer, and decided to create a text for him. The music was composed by Laskowski himself, during a night travel by train to Bialystok.

When the singer made “colorful fairs” during the Opole festival, not everyone appreciated the potential of the song. His performance met with an extremely mixed reception – the audience accepted him enthusiastically, but the jury was critical. One of the members of the competition committee, Andrzej Wróblewskihe granted zero points to the song. This caused a lot of controversy among viewers.

Despite the low notes from the jurors, Laskowski received the journalists’ award and the audience award for “colorful fairs”. Thanks to this, the potential of the song was noticed by Maryla Rodowicz, who decided to create her own version. In the same year she appeared with her own interpretation on the prestigious festival in Sopot.
The artist’s show was spectacular. Maryla made sure that props appearing on the stage, referring to the text of the song. The viewers even dumbfounded when they saw pigeons in a cage, clowns and cotton wool sellers. Her energetic version of “colorful fairs” liked the audience extremely (she won a special prize from viewers), and then gained publicity outside our country, including in the USSR.

The version of Maryla Rodowicz undoubtedly contributed to the consolidation of “colorful fairs” in the minds of the listeners and caused that generations of Poles know them to this day. Some have no idea that the song was originally performed by a completely different artist! However, some people believe that the song’s success is wrongly attributed to the singer. Famous actor, Andrzej Grabowskihe emphasized that Laskowski’s performance had a deeper, more emotional overtones and better reflected the atmosphere of the 70s.
The song – both in Laskowski and Rodowicz – talked about longing for childhood and the transient charm of old fairs, full colors, toys, cotton candy and joyful moments. The sentimental text quickly went to the hearts of the listeners, and thanks to the universal message it became a timeless classic of entertainment music. To this day, other artists often use a song in films or cabarets as a symbol of the past era of the PRL.
