Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance in the second part of “Dune” was kept secret. As the director himself admits, he wanted to see how long it would be possible to keep any secret in Hollywood, and the actress’s role was supposed to be a surprise for fans. Taylor-Joy’s appearance at the London premiere was quite a surprise. It was then that the director announced her participation in the film.
The shots with Anya Taylor-Joy were shot in secret, and myself Denis Villenueve he was delighted with the idea of keeping something a secret practically until the premiere.
“I think Hollywood is the gossipiest city in the world, and as an experiment I wanted to see how long we could keep the secret. We did it. It was a special unit, we went to Africa to shoot with Anya in secret. I just liked it “I came up with the idea of keeping it a surprise for the audience until the very end; it was a gift I wanted to keep for the fans,” he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Although Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance in the latest “Dune” turned out to be quite a sensation, the actress appears in the film for… just a few seconds. Her character is Alia Atreides, sister of Paul (Timothee Chalamet). The heroine in the second part of “Dune” appears as an unborn child, a voice with which Jessica talks (Rebecca Ferguson) after drinking the Water of Life. Even though Alia has not yet been born, she has consciousness and ancestral memories thanks to a mysterious liquid.
We see Anya on the screen in a shot of several seconds, which is the main character’s vision caused by drinking the mentioned Water of Life. It is then that Paul sees the legacy of his family. The scene with the actress reveals Jessica, Paul and Alia’s family connections with Vladimir Harkonnen. He predicts the future for Arrakis. Alia Atreides will likely be much more important in the third film (if made).
In Frank Herbert’s novels, he plays one of the most important roles. As Esquire notes, the character becomes known as “Saint Alice of the Knife” – and it is she who kills Harkonnen. In the second part of “Dune”, it is Paul who takes his life.
