Daniel Craig will not play the title role in the film “Sgt. Rock” directed by Luka Guadagnino. The production, set in the realities of World War II and based on DC comics, was to be another cooperation between a British actor and an Italian creator after their joint film “Queer”. The decision to resign Craig was confirmed by the sources of “Deadline”, although the reasons for his departure remain unknown. DC Studios has not yet commented on this matter.
The first reports of Craig’s engagement for this production appeared a few months ago. “Sgt. Rock” was taken into account as another Guadagnino project before the director got involved in the Reboot “American Psycho” for Lionsgate. The script for the film was written by Justin Kuritzkes, a collaborator of Guadagnino at “Challengers” and “Queer”.
SGT. Franklin “Frank” Rock is an iconic figure of American war comics, Created in 1959 by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert. The hero, commander of the fictional company of Easy fighting during World War II, was the object of interest of Hollywood over the decades. Earlier, this role was combined, among others Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis.
Guadagnino recently presented his film “Queer” – adaptation of the novel by William S. Burroughs – who met with the enthusiastic reception of critics. Despite the lack of Oscar nomination, Craig gathered praise for his creation of William Lee, an American emigrant struggling with his own identity.
Currently, the Italian director is working on the thriller “After the Hunt” with Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield, who will go to theaters on October 10. Craig, on the other hand, is preparing for the premiere of the third part of “Na Knives” – “Living or dead”, planned for this year.
