Dirty Horns in “Must Be The Music”. “Our street style”

Magdalena Birecka, Polsat: Say a few words about yourself. Who are you?

Sławek: – We’re Dirty Horns. We come from Krakow, except for Filip, who commutes to us from Goleniów near Szczecin. We play broadly understood improvised music, inspired by both jazz and electronic music. It is actually a mix of different styles – we draw from street music, hits of the 1960s, 70s, 80s, but also contemporary sounds.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Piotrek: – We are inspired by the street. We take songs for the workshop, which are currently popular – those that appear on Tiktoku, Instagram or YouTube. We reach for pieces that “live” in space longer or simply those that in our opinion will sound well in our composition. We convert them to our street style.

We draw rhythmically from hip-hop, drum and bass, latino, and sometimes even acoustic techno. We try to make our music to the city pulse – the city’s fast rhythm, everyday energy in the urban jungle.

What do you want to convey to people? Do you have any mission?

Michał: – We want to transfer energy – a lot of energy! We want people to see music in various configurations and genres, in unobvious combinations. We combine elements of club, hip-hop and acoustic music, using our instruments: two saxophones, a trombone, a suhooff and a compact drums of Piotr.

Where did the idea for such a set of instruments come from?

Filip: – This is the result of a natural process. We simply chosen such a composition during studies – each of us played on our instrument and at some point it turned out that it sounds great together. We can play a really wide repertoire, because everyone brings something from each other, creating a full, harmonious sound together. I think that accident played a role here, but on the other hand – this combination works and reflects the character of the street well.

Colorful Dirty Horns tracksuits. “I was fascinated by this energy”

Your positive energy is very visible, but it is worth paying attention to your outfits. Colorful, orthalion -style vintage tracksuits dominate.

Filip: – Yes, energy is one thing, but the outfit also matters to us. Because we play mainly on the street, we decided that our image should reflect this. We focused on ortallion tracksuits – rustling, colorful, dynamic. It seems to us that they harmonize well with our music and energy we want to convey.

Piotrek: – We also have a second variant of clothing, which we call “elegantly sporty” in the lobby. In this edition we put on colorful shirts, jackets, sometimes even suits, which we combine with fashionable, sports shoes.

Do you have a stylist who is responsible for your image?

Sławek: – I’ve always liked fashion – I walked around the shops, browsing clothes, looking for inspiration on the internet. I ordered, measured, sometimes I sent back – and so with time a quite large wardrobe collected. I decided to share it with the team, which made me become an informal stylist Dirty Horns.

Do orthalion outfits give you energy?

Sławek: – Definitely! Earlier I happened to play in suits or more formal stylizations – dark jeans, shirt … and I always felt a bit like a waiter (laughs). These outfits were too stiff for me. Colorful outfit gives me freedom and energy. I have been listening to hip -hop for a long time and I have always been fascinated by the energy that can be seen in the music videos – and tracksuits reign!

“The City Guard shows interest”

Did you make the decision to participate in “Must Be The Music” together?

Sławek: – Yes, it was the decision of the whole team. From the beginning, we thought about a performance on a television program, and when “Must Be The Music” returned after nine years break, we decided it was the perfect moment. We immediately knew that it was a chance for us we were waiting for.

Piotrek: – When we play on the street, people often approach us, talk to us, react. Sometimes the city guard or other services show interest (laughs). At some point, someone came and suggested that we try our hand in the program. We are very happy that we made this decision – the format perfectly matches our music, especially since it also gives space for instrumental bands.

Sławek: – It was us in this program that captivated us – you don’t have to have a singer on the front. “Must Be The Music” is a place for musical experiments and curiosities, and we wanted to show that our music can defend itself – without words, only thanks to sounds.

What are your goals and music plans?

Piotrek: – Our goals are the same from the beginning, i.e. to get with our music, good energy, good message, our expression to as many people as possible, which is why we go out with our arrangements to the street and may thanks to such television programs as “Must Be The Music” more people heard our sounds.

Filip: – After the program, we would like to develop our brand, record an album or two and show more and more diverse pages of our musical possibilities. First of all, we want to create music at an even better level, and at the same time it is good to play with it as it has happened so far.

Sławek: – In the near future we would like to play as many concerts as possible, ride a little around Poland and Europe, as well as play at large festivals and large stages. And as Filip said, having fun and develop well, constantly improve our passion, which is music.
