However, the path to world fame was not easy. Before Queen became one of the most recognizable bands in the world, the members had to get to know and accept each other. This was especially true of Freddie Mercury, whose personality and manner clearly stood out from the rest of the band.
In a recent interview, Brian May, Queen’s guitarist, recalled the beginnings of his collaboration with Mercury.
Although Freddie is now seen as a music legend, in his early years his eccentric style caused confusion among his peers.
The musicians met when they were students, attending different universities – Freddie studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, May at Imperial College, Taylor attended dental school, and Deacon specialized in electronics. Even then, Freddie, in his mind, was a star.
Freddie was born a rock star
“Freddie was very flamboyant, he dressed like a rock star… He was a born artist because he had this inner confidence,” says May.
At first, Freddie’s unusual behavior made the other band members feel a bit insecure. May admits that many people thought he was “a bit rude”. However, his charisma and incredible energy made him extremely interesting and funny.
“When we first worked with him, it was a little unsettling because he was running around a lot and screaming. We were wondering, ‘Is this even going to work?'” May recalled.
Queen musicians supported and motivated each other – this was the key to their success
One important aspect of working at Queen was mutual motivation. Each team member supported the others and offered constructive feedback. May recalls that while recording Freddie’s vocals, he was often in the recording room, listening carefully and sharing his observations.
“I was sitting with the engineer while Freddie was recording the vocals. He was like, ‘How do you like it?’ I replied, ‘We like this part, but we don’t really like how it went that way.’ We helped each other to get the best effect,” said the guitarist.
Similarly, when May recorded guitar solos, Freddie was present to offer his support.
