“The reaction when Wesley Snipes came into the movie was the most intense thing I’ve ever heard in a movie theater. People screaming with unbridled joy and love is also the sound of legacy. Give me more Blade, please” Reynolds wrote in an Instagram post.
Wesley Snipes told Entertainment Weekly what it was like to reprise his role as Blade after so many years:
“I thought it didn’t make sense, but when you get a call from Ryan Reynolds out of the blue after 20 years, you’re like, ‘Okay, I have to take this. Let’s see what this is about.’ He pitched the idea to me… He said they were all in and if I was in, everyone was in. And that’s how it went.”
Snipes’ guest appearance in the latest Deadpool film comes exactly 25 years and 340 days after his 1998 debut in the role, making the actor the longest-running Marvel live-action career in history.
The actor also broke another record, which is the longest gap between appearances in Marvel films. The last time we saw him in this universe was exactly 19 years and 231 days ago in the production “Blade: Trinity” (2004).
“Blade” was first announced at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con. Since then, the creators working on the project have been constantly changing. There were different versions of the script, but only the sixth, written by Eric Pearson (“Thor: Ragnarok”), was supposed to meet Marvel’s needs. Other difficulties included writers’ strikes and the pandemic, which paralyzed not only the film market.
Two directors have already left the project; two years ago Bassam Tariq resigned, and in recent days Yann Demange did the same. No replacement has been found for him at this time. Several actors have also withdrawn, including Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo.
The November 1st date is set to begin filming, and it’s fast approaching. Whether it will actually start then is unknown. Blade was originally set to premiere on November 7, 2025; however, given all the problems the project has had along the way, that date seems unlikely.
Mahershala Aliwho was supposed to play the title character, does not hide his frustration with the constant changes in the project and the chaos. Will Snipes’ words in “Deadpool & Wolverine” prove prophetic? Let us recall that his character uttered the words so apt in this situation in one of the scenes: “There is and will always be only one Blade”.
