Luca Guadagnino, known for such productions as “Those Days, Those Nights” and “Suspiria”, will undertake to create a new version of Bret Easton Ellis’s cult novel “American Psycho”. Austin Butler will play the role of Patrick Bateman. The film, produced by Lionsgate, will not be a remake of the 2000 adaptation with Christian Bale, but a new look at this multidimensional story.
Scott Z. Burns (“The Laundromat”) is responsible for the script, which suggests that we can expect a fresh approach to the source material. Guadagnino, who recently wrapped filming “After the Hunt” with Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield, has experience in both art and genre cinema. His vision for “American Psycho” may therefore focus on the intense, perhaps more intimate, dimension of the story, which fits into his characteristic style.
Previously, it was speculated that Jacob Elordi could play the role of Bateman, but ultimately no casting took place. An interesting fact is that both Elordi and Butler have played Elvis roles in two completely different films – “Priscilla” by Sofia Coppola and “Elvis” by Baz Luhrmann.
Now 33-year-old Austin Butler has gained recognition in Hollywood thanks to his versatile acting career. He started as a teenage actor in Disney Channel and Nickelodeon productions, such as “School Survival Guide” and “Hannah Montana”. His breakthrough role was in “The Carrie Diaries” (2013-2014), where he played Sebastian Kydd. In 2018, he made his Broadway debut in Eugene O’Neill’s The Cold Comes, playing alongside Denzel Washington.
True He gained fame for his role as Elvis Presley in the biographical film “Elvis” (2022) directed by Baz Luhrmann. This performance resulted in a Golden Globe and a BAFTA award, as well as an Oscar nomination. Butler also appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” (2019), where he played Tex Watson. This performance earned him a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Teamwork.
