“It is with deep regret that we inform you that he died on November 25 after a serious illness Andrzej Marzec. Organizer of the largest concerts, manager, cultural impresario. A family in sadness,” we read on social media.
Andrzej Marzec was a man thanks to whom the music and concert industry in Poland developed rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s. He was behind the organization of some of the biggest events. In the years 1969-1989 he worked in Polish Artistic Agency PAGART and he brought the world’s biggest stars to our country. They were among them Elton John, Leonard Cohen, Tina Turner, Iron Maiden, Metallica, The Cure Whether Depeche Mode.
“I was the man who wanted to” – he said in January 2016 in an interview for Polish Radio. He saw himself as a person who could efficiently manage and organize a large event.
Andrzej Marzec brought the biggest music stars to Poland. Thanks to him, concerts by Elton John and Tina Turner took place in the 1980s and 1990s
The first band that Marzec brought to Poland was was The Tremeloes – in November 1969. In turn, in 1981, a month before martial law, thanks to him, the legendary Tina Turner appeared in our country. She played two concerts – in Katowice and Warsaw – although three were originally planned. “There were supposed to be two concerts at Torwar, but the transport of the equipment from Katowice was delayed; the truck carrying it stood for three hours at the station in Częstochowa, wanting to refuel, because there were such problems back then. And two concerts turned into one,” Andrzej Marzec recalled at that time on Polish Radio.
“At that time, Elton John wanted to enter the American market. Due to the fact that there were journalists from three overseas television stations in Poland at that time, he did not need much persuasion. In addition, he met Lech Wałęsa. All this meant that the information about the Briton’s performance ‘behind the Iron Curtain’ was widely reported in the United States,” he said about the organization of Elton John’s show, who also wanted to promote himself in the USA thanks to the concert in Poland.
In the 1990s, when Andrzej Marzec ended his cooperation with PAGART, he established his own event company – Andrzej Marzec Concerts (known by the abbreviation AMC). Under the new banner, he brought to Poland further giants known all over the world – Bob Dylan, The Cure, Foo Figters, Toto or many others.
