Many years he was waiting for a role that would take him out of the actor’s “waiting room” and placed him among the greatest stars of Polish cinema. After graduating from the Warsaw State Drama School, he played episodic roles for a decade, trying to attract the attention of directors. He appeared in such productions as “Bar Atlantic”, “Miodowe lata” and “Boża podszewka”, but his name often didn’t even appear in the credits.
The breakthrough came in 1999, when Krzysztof Krauze entrusted him with the role of Gerard Nowak in the film “The Debt”. For this role, Chyra received the Eagle Award and the award for best male role at the Gdynia Film Festival.
“Actually I started my career when I was 35, so I didn’t choke on success right away. I had done something before, but it wasn’t intensive work,” he recalled in an interview with “Życie na Gorąco”.
Since the famous “Dług”, Chyra’s acting career has gained momentum. The artist has appeared in, among others, Feliks Falk’s “Komornik”, Marek Koterski’s “Wszyscy są Chrystusami”, Andrzej Wajda’s “Katyń” and the film “W imię…” by Małgorzata Szumowska. Last year we could admire him in the famous “Sortownia”, a medical drama. He has also appeared on the stages of Polish theatres for years.
Chyra, however, remains a versatile actor and from time to time we can also see him in music video appearances. In his career, he has already appeared in the Myslovitz band’s video for the song “Z Twarzą Marilyn Monroe” as the title beauty. He appeared in a special effects-filled production entitled “CYE” by Andrzej Smolik and Kasia Kurzawska. He was also invited to collaborate on the video clip “Jak nie zwrot po Północna” by Polish rappers Kuban and Szpaku. He also appeared in the atmospheric video of the PRO8L3M band for the song “Nicea”. The actor was also mentioned in the lyrics of this song.
In 2011, Poland the music group Video dedicated a song to Andrzej Chyra titled “Andrzej Chyra”, which is a peculiar tribute to the actor.
Chyra was still a student at the Warsaw Theatre School when he fell head over heels in love with his classmate, Marta Kownacka, who later became one of the most respected casting directors in Poland. They were united by their love of cinema. They would sometimes watch three films in a row in one day. Before they graduated, they decided they were made for each other and got married.
Little is known about their marriage. Both they carefully guarded their privacy, they didn’t talk about their lives in interviews, they didn’t pose together on celebrity walls. Those who knew them when they were a couple say they got along great. Until…
Apparently it’s real The reason for Andrzej and Marta’s divorce was the famous Polish actress Magdalena Cielecka. Chyra met her through his wife, who invited Magda to their home for one of their parties. In 2002, Andrzej and Marta officially ended their marriage, but remained friends. The actor had a long-term relationship with Magdalena Cielecka, which was widely described in the media. After a few years, the couple separated.
In 2015, the actor started a relationship with Paulina Jaroszewicz, with whom he has a son, Tadeusz. Currently, they both take care of raising their son together, although they are no longer together.
In 2004, another film by Krzysztof Krauze debuted. “My Nikifor” tells the story of the last years of the life of the painter Nikifor Krynicki, who is taken care of by the artist Marian Włosiński. Krystyna Feldman played the role of the main character, and Andrzej Chyra tried to be the guardian. Finally, the role went to Roman Gancarczyk.
The 60-year-old actor from Gryfów Śląski also he sought a role in a biographical film about the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Lech Wałęsa. This production also passed him by, because today we know that the main character in the film “Wałęsa. Man of Hope” was played by Robert Więckiewicz.
The actor who plays Bogdan Rosa in the series “The Girl and the Astronaut” admits that He was always an “outsider” and was extremely critical of his roles.
“In Polkowice, practically all my life was happening between me and my wall in the room” – Chyra remembers her youth.
“It’s rare for me to be moved when watching a film in which I act. I see my actions, my shortcomings too much. I check if I managed to do this or that,” he said about his acting incarnations.
It is probably this approach that made is a master of his craft. Since his student years, he has been honing his acting talent and constantly building a solid portfolio. It is not without reason that Andrzej Chyra has long been considered one of the best actors of his generation. On the occasion of his 60th birthday, we wish you even more professional success!
