The central character is Carmen, who, after the tragic murder of her husband, faces a dramatic choice regarding her own future and the fate of her newborn daughter. Her decision to leave her child in a monastery orphanage initiates a series of events that not only transform her life, but also introduce profound changes in Madrid society. In effect Carmen finds a new home in a guesthouse at Akacjowa 38where her life and the fate of other inhabitants intertwine, creating a multi-threaded story about survival and the search for identity.

Lolita decides to pursue a career as a bullfighter Servando intends to support her in this. Martin is concerned about Casilda and turns to Pablo for help.
