Netflix used artificial intelligence to generate photos in the documentary?

Netflix offers quite an impressive catalog of documentaries, and subsequent productions attract a large audience of fans of true crime stories. One of the latest productions, titled “What Jennifer Did,” caught viewers' attention not only because of the intriguing case it talks about, but also because of a significant irregularity.

“What Did Jennifer Do” tells the story of a mysterious criminal case in which the titular Jennifer was involved in a burglary into her family home and the murder of her parents. It was she who called the police to the scene of the incident, but the investigators' attention was drawn to a large number of inconsistencies in the girl's testimony.

As it turned out, she had been lying to her parents for many years, and ordering the murder was the final step to keep her lies a secret.

The document is full of recordings from the interrogation room, interviews with experts and photos of the accused. The latter caught the viewers' special attention, specifically the photo shown around the 30th minute of the film. In this fragment, Jennifer's friend talks about the girl, describing her as happy and sincere, and a photograph appears in the background to confirm these words.

In the photo, we see Jennifer raising her hands in the popular “victoria” gesture, but careful viewers noticed that the hands looked unnatural – exactly as if they came out of an artificial intelligence image generator. This is one of the most characteristic features of artificially generated images – the details of human physiognomy are too complex to reproduce.

Accusations were immediately thrown at Netflix, which undermines the credibility of the prepared document. The website “PetaPixel” proposed an explanation for this situation: the producers had too few photos of Jennifer and decided to use artificial intelligence to increase the number of materials.

Netflix has not yet responded to the accusations.
