Glenn Hughes Still Has a Grievance Against Deep Purple. He’ll Never Talk to Them Again

Born in Great Britain Glenn Hughes (nicknamed “The Voice of Rock”) is known to fans for his performances in Trapeze and Deep Purple (1973-76); he also collaborated with, among others, the guitarist Tony Iommi With Black Sabbath (the album “Seventh Star” recorded under the banner Black Sabbath feat. Tony Iommi from 1986, and the releases “The 1996 DEP Sessions” and “Fused” already as Iommi and Hughes). Since the late 1970s, he has been pursuing a parallel solo career.

With Deep Purple, Glenn Hughes recorded the classic albums “Burn” (1974), “Stormbringer” (1974) and “Come Taste The Band” (1975). After the singer left Ian Gillan and the bassist Roger Glover a vocalist was then hired to cooperate DavidCoverdale and it was Hughes. In 2016, together with Deep Purple, he was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

It was these events from 2016 that Hughes returned to in his latest interview with Guitar Interactive.

“I will never speak to them again because they were rude to me. Both Roger, Ian (Paice, drummer) and Gillan were rude to me and David Coverdale. It hurt me a lot. But I didn’t care because I knew they were rude. I was the only sober person there. Gillan was rude to me on stage when accepting the award. I wanted to congratulate him and he looked at me as if I wasn’t there. The guy has a problem with me and that’s it. I feel sorry for him,” emphasizes Glenn Hughes.

“I’ve tried to have some kind of friendship with him for the last 40 years, but David Coverdale and I are not there for him. I wish him the best, but I don’t want to waste my time on his behaviour,” he added.

During his current tour, Hughes celebrates the 50th anniversary of the album “Burn” by playing it in its entirety. As part of it, he visited Poland again at the end of April, playing in Warsaw and Krakow. The above-mentioned Deep Purple album was recorded by: Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), DavidCoverdale (vocal), Glenn Hughes (bass, vocals), Ian Paice (drums) and died in 2012. Jon Lord (keyboards). Currently, only Paice remains in the band from this crew, and he is also the only musician who has performed from the beginning.

Let us add that on July 19th, a new Deep Purple album will be released, titled “=1”. This will be the guitarist’s studio debut Simon McBridewhich replaced in 2022 Steve Morse.
