According to The Hollywood Reporter, A24 studio beat the competition and acquired the rights to the film adaptation of the upcoming book by Ben Mezrich titled “Checkmate” (“Checkmate”). Mezrich is an author whose books have already been adapted for the screen in the films “The Social Network” and “Amateur Investors”.
The true story that will be told on screen took place in 2022 during the chess match between world champion Hans Niemann and Magnus Carlsen. After Niemann won in one of the games, Carlsen withdrew from the tournament, announcing it on Twitter. He added to the announcement a recording of coach Jose Mourinho and his statement: “I prefer not to say anything, because if I speak, I will be in trouble.”
Many interpreted this as an accusation of cheating by the world champion. During the next meeting between the two chess players during another tournament, this time played online, Carlsen withdrew from the match with Niemann after his first move.
Major film studios and streaming services fought for the rights to tell Carlsen and Niemann's story. Ultimately, the offer from A24 studio won, offering a seven-digit amount. The final details of the contract are still being finalized. Fielder is currently set to direct the project, and Stone will produce it with her husband, Dave McCary.
The book and the film based on it are to focus not only on the rivalry between Carlsen and Niemann, but also on showing the world of modern chess, which has turned into a billion-dollar business, thus leading to a situation called “the clash of tradition and innovation.”
