Emma Roberts Defends ‘Madame Web’: Who’s to Blame for the Film’s Failure?

“I personally love ‘Madame Web’, I really enjoyed the movie,” she said. Roberts“I think we all did great. The director SJ Clarkson She did an amazing job. She’s the reason I did this movie.”

Why, according to Roberts, did the film flop in theaters and garner extremely negative reviews? “I think the film would have been better received if it weren’t for the internet culture and the trend of making jokes about everything,” the actress said. “It pisses me off that people treat a lot of things, including the ones I was involved in, as a joke.”

She added that it’s hard for actors and creators to predict what will be a success and what will be a flop. “Sometimes something works, sometimes it doesn’t. Everyone likes to give the impression that they know if something will work. And the truth is, they can’t. A movie doesn’t do well in theaters, but then it does well because it’s a trend on TikTok. Something sells, but then you watch it and you don’t understand why people bought it,” Roberts said.

“It’s no secret that we want to create something good and hit our time slot. Apart from that, there are wishes and prayers. I’m not scared of failure or the fact that people might not like my work,” she concluded.

“Madame Web” tells the story of Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson), a young paramedic who gains the ability to predict the future. Thanks to this, she tries to protect three teenagers (Sydney SweeneyIsabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor) from the killer pursuing them, Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim). The man turns out to be connected to the woman’s past.

The film hit theaters on February 14, 2024. Reviews were overwhelmingly negative. “Madame Web isn’t as bad as its somewhat botched promotional campaign might suggest. In fact, it’s a lot worse,” wrote a Rolling Stone critic. “A real-life Chernobyl-level disaster that seems increasingly radioactive as it goes along (…) The only amazing thing about this Spider-Man spinoff is that someone, somewhere, signed off on its release.”
