“Dirty Dancing”, “Mamma Mia!”: Ranking of the best holiday movies

When Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his wife Ellen (Beverly D.) appear on the TV quiz show’Angelo) win a trip to Europe and decide to spend a wonderful vacation there with their children. The plan is to visit several European capitals, but from the very beginning of the trip nothing goes as planned. It is a comedy whose humor is built on a series of unfortunate coincidences.

Two years earlier, the Griswold family also went on a trip full of absurdities; in the film “In a Crooked Mirror: Vacation” (1983), the destination of their trip was the “Walley World” amusement park.

The plot of the film takes viewers to the holiday season of 1963. Optimistic Frances Houseman (Jennifer Grey), whom her friends call Baby, spends time with her parents at a summer resort. There she meets a talented dancer, Johnny’Castle's ego’a (Patrick Swayze), who is looking for a new show partner. Baby finally agrees to take a crash course and participate with him.

“Dirty Dancing” is considered one of the cult films of the 1980s. Among the things that will go down in history are: thanks to the unique song included in the soundtrack: “(AND’ve Had) The Time of My Life”. The song received an Oscar, a Grammy and a Golden Globe in 1988.

This is a proposition for people who they like “over-the-top” movies without fast-paced action. On June 16, two characters meet on a train heading to Vienna – a French woman, Celine (Julie Delpy), whose destination is Paris, and an American, Jesse (Ethan Hawke), returning to the United States.

They find the dialogue so engaging that they decide to continue it for the next several hours, traveling through the capital of Austria together.

Richard Linklater's film had two sequels: “Before Sunset” (2004) and “Before Midnight” (2013).

It is a film adaptation of the musical of the same title is based on the songs of the Swedish group ABBA.

The story tells about Donna (Meryl Streep), who runs a small hotel on one of the Greek islands. Daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) will be getting married soon, and her big dream is for her father to walk her down the aisle. Unfortunately, the girl doesn't know who it could be. To find out the truth, she decides to send invitations to three men with whom her mother dated many years ago.

Wes Anderson is an artist who immediately brings to mind a holiday atmosphere. His productions are full of colors, warmth, humor and charm. The characters in the works (mostly) are likeable, which makes you want to support them and accompany them in their unusual adventures.

“Lovers on the Moon” takes viewers to New England in the 1960s. The story is about a scout who falls in love with a teenager who is not much older than him. Young people decide to escape from their families to experience real life in the wilderness.

The film's cast includes many famous actors, including: Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton.

“Wild Hunt” filmed in New Zealand combine absurdity and family cinema with comedic warmth.

The story follows teenager Ricky (Julian Dennison), a rebellious teenager who receives a chance to change his life. He ends up in a foster family where he is cared for by his tender Aunt Bella (Rima Te Wiata) and his surly Uncle Hec (Sam Neill). When Bella dies, the men flee the house to hide in the bush. Condemned to each other, they are forced to finally learn to cooperate.

This movie has everything you want from a holiday movie. Beautiful (Italian!) landscapes, soothing music (songs composed by Sufjan Stevens and the 80's hit “Love My Way” by The Psychedelic Furs), sensuality and an original love story.

The production “Those Days, Those Nights” was based on the book by André Aciman from 2007. It talks about entering adulthood, desire, as well as the joy of life and appreciation of its beauty.

After its release, the film received huge acclaim from the audience; in 2018 he received, among others: Oscar, BAFTA and Critics' Choice Award for Best Adapted Screenplay (James Ivory). In the ranking of the best-rated romantic works on Rotten Tomatoes, it even beat the cult production “Casablanca” (1942).

The story also brought the lead actor (Timothée Chalamet) to the top.
